ARSENAL REACH AGREEMENT FOR MERINO

ARSENAL REACH AGREEMENT FOR MERINO

Posted on August 23, 2024 by Kareem

Arsenal have reached an agreement in principle with Real Sociedad for the transfer of midfielder Mikel Merino. The deal, valued at approximately €33.5 million (£28.4 million) upfront, includes an additional €5 million (£4.2 million) in potential add-ons. Merino is now set to undergo a medical examination before finalizing a long-term contract, with personal terms already settled.

The 28-year-old Spaniard is expected to strengthen Arsenal’s midfield, where he will play in the No.8 role. Merino played a pivotal role in Spain’s victorious campaign at Euro 2024, featuring in all seven matches of the tournament. Arsenal’s interest in Merino predates this success, having scouted him extensively during his standout performances for Real Sociedad last season.

As Arsenal prepares for Merino’s arrival, they are also looking to make space in their squad before the transfer window closes next week. Striker Eddie Nketiah is currently the player closest to leaving, with Nottingham Forest in advanced talks to secure his services. There is optimism that a deal worth around £30 million can be finalized.

Nketiah, 25, has seen his role diminish at the Emirates Stadium and has not started a competitive game since New Year’s Eve. Given his need for regular playing time, both he and Arsenal are inclined to pursue a move that will benefit all parties involved. Nottingham Forest are keen to add a new striker before the transfer window shuts and have also expressed interest in Feyenoord’s Santiago Gimenez.

Gimenez, a Mexican forward, has been impressive since his move to the Netherlands, scoring 26 goals across all competitions last season. His strong form has continued into the current season, with four goals in the opening three games. Forest’s pursuit of Gimenez highlights their intention to bolster their attacking options as they prepare for the remainder of the season.

My name is Kareem. This is my blog.

I am a massive fan of football (soccer) across the globe - mainly the English Premier League, and closer to home, the Indian Super League.

In England, I am a big fan of Manchester United, though they are still yet to return to the best of times that they had under Sir Alex Ferguson.

In India, I live in Kochin, Kerala, so there is really only one team I could support - the Kerala Blasters!

You may have read some of my work (I work in the sports department in a well-known newspaper), but this blog is all about my own personal interest, and writing for fun.
