The Swiss midfielder was sent off in the first half of the game for his dangerous tackle on Joao Cancelo.
Arsenal were trailing hosts Manchester City by two goals when Xhaka was sent off thanks to the above mentioned first half red card. Manchester City took full advantage of the numerical advantage with three more goals to make it a comprehensive 5-0 victory.

Xhaka was also in the Arsenal XI for the 2-0 home defeat at the hands of London rivals Chelsea. The Swiss player also began the third league game of the season at Premier League champions Manchester City before he was given his marching orders for the tackle on Portuguese international Cancelo.
